Malaria is prevalent in Africa and we strongly advise all visitors to take anti-malaria precautions as a matter of course at all times of the year. It is recommended that you take a prophylactic anti-malarial drug, which, depending on the drug, is usually started before arrival and continued for a period after leaving the country. You are also advised to ensure your tetanus shots are up to date. You will need to show proof of a Yellow Fever inoculation only if you are coming from a Yellow Fever area (see CDC).

In most instances, the water at the safari camps and lodges is clean and safe to drink. However, bottled water is available everywhere and is complimentary at most of the better properties. You are advised not to use water in the rivers and dams for swimming and drinking. Needless to say, all water in towns, hotels, and swimming-pools is from purified central water supplies or boreholes and is therefore perfectly safe.

January and February is the rainy season but it is also when the animals fawn so it is a great time to see the baby animals. October and November are the hottest months but this is the best time to see large concentrations of animals as they are congregated at the rivers and watering holes.

Currently, international travel laws state, that when traveling on a United States passport, there is no need to obtain an entry visa for the following African countries – Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, or Mozambique. However, when entering and leaving some countries they charge visitors an airport fee from $20 – $50. We ask all our clients to make sure that they are traveling on a valid passport and that it has two consecutive blank pages and six months left before it expires. Visas are required for entry into Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

The large majority of Southern and East Africa is safe for tourist travel, and the people you will meet are very warm and welcoming. However, like any anywhere, there are certain areas where petty crime is a problem. Tourists are not advised to visit these areas by themselves or at night. In all other areas, tourists should practice good common sense safety habits, such as not wearing flashy jewelry.
